  • Raspberry Emergency

    Thursday July 29th, 2010

Having ruby red homemade raspberry jam waiting patiently on a shelf in my pantry is like having summer sunshine in a jar.

  • Spicy Korean Pork Tenderloin

    Friday May 28th, 2010

Friday, we celebrated homecomings - our return from Sicily and the return of two other couples from Australia. We were all delighted to be back and decided to share a meal. I offered to bring roasted pork tenderloin and asked if I could cook it in my friend’s oven while we enjoyed appetizers and shared travel stories.

  • Spring in Vermont means rhubarb recipes galore

    Saturday April 17th, 2010

Do you still have snow? Is the sap running? Have you seen mergansers on the river? These familiar questions are heard at the post office, the Creamery, the market, and at community dinners in the early spring. Rhubarb is rising and it's time to cook.

  • Hors d’ oeuvres- the nicest nibbles

    Wednesday April 7th, 2010

There were ten guests at my most recent hors d’oeuvres party. Charles served wine, sparkling water and fruit spritzers. I served olives, roasted peppers and artichokes from the market, and a cheese platter. I made three hors d’oeuvres as well. Here’s how I did it:

  • Garlic Connects Friends

    Friday March 26th, 2010

It was a snail that introduced me to garlic. My mother was from England and my father was from Slovakia so spice and punch came in the form of mustard, black pepper or sauerkraut. Olives, capers and anchovies never appeared on our table. Since then garlic appears so frequently in my recipes that I use garlic scapes, the immature flower stalks of hard neck garlic, as my logo.

  • I’ve got a lovely bunch of Carrots

    Friday March 12th, 2010

Before I went to Sicily, I thought of tomatoes, peppers, aubergine, artichokes and mushrooms as Italian vegetables. Carrots were the wrong color for my red, white and green Italian palette. But, since my daily trips to the market, I have changed my mind.

  • Chocolate Chip Date Nut Cake

    Tuesday March 2nd, 2010

After yearning for her childhood treat ten Carole Egbert sees a recipe for a chocolate, date cake in a newspaper column. "With minor adjustments, this is the cake I have baked for many parties. I always use a Bundt pan and slather the cooled cake with unsweetened, heavy cream that has been beaten to stiff peaks. Last week, I topped the cream with sliced strawberries and promised our guests that I would share the recipe. Here’s how I did it"

  • White Burger - Cod for Dinner

    Tuesday February 23rd, 2010

It was rainy, cold and grim and I was home alone. It was a perfect evening to cuddle up with a burger, a potato, salad and Alfred Hitchcock, a film not the man! The film could be Rear Window, Dial M for Murder or The Man who Knew Too Much and the burger could be red meat, poultry or fish. I decided on The Man Who Knew Too Much and fish.

  • Apple Crumb Cake

    Monday February 8th, 2010

When the Vermont power goes out midway through her baking, Carol Egbert can't even see to paint let alone save her crumb cake. Four hours later and with the cake suffering a less than perfect oven experience, she finds it still tastes great for breakfast or dessert.

  • Chicken Soup

    Monday January 25th, 2010

Cooking chicken soup can be an all day affair but by beginning with chicken broth and a rotisserie chicken from the market, I had a full flavored, body-and-soul warming soup ready in less than an hour. Here’s how I did it:
