The Stuff of Legends – The Return of Pierre Koffman

In an otherwise unexciting October on the culinary radar, French Chef and legend, Pierre Koffmann’s return to London seems to have created quite a stir with the masses.  Initially launching his ‘Pop-Up’ restaurant on the roof of Selfridges as part of the London Restaurant Festival, due to popular demand they, Selfridges, have now extended availability until Saturday 31st October.

Koffman opened his infamous restaurant ‘La Tante Claire’ in Chelsea in 1977 and it quickly became “The” restaurant at the top of the ladder of London’s restaurant scene.  Awarded its third Michelin star in 1993, Pierre Koffman became one of the very few Chefs to retain three stars.  With the likes of Gordon Ramsay, Marco Pierre White and Marcus Wareing all working in his kitchen, it’s not hard to see what makes Koffman such a cult figure in the industry.  For his return, Koffmann is joined by members of his original kitchen brigade including Tom Aikens, Eric Chavot, Tom Kitchin, Helena Puolakka, Raphael Duntoye and William Curley, who are all now highly renowned and successful Chefs in their own right.

I managed to snag a table for dinner on day two of the opening week and needless to say, I wasn’t disappointed.  Initially apprehensive about how well a marquee on the roof of Selfridges would work, it didn’t take me long to believe that I was in a proper restaurant, which was tastefully but not obtrusively decorated.  Staff are extremely professional and attentive without being remotely condescending or overly attentive, which I found to be a breath of fresh air!  The menu is fixed at £75 for 3 courses, which isn’t exactly credit-crunch-friendly… but this is a once in a life time experience that you may never be able to have again and if you are a genuine foodie, then it is well worth every penny.  Every course was absolutely wonderful, with plenty of seasonal fare on the menu and luxury in abundance.  I ended my meal with the infamous Pierre Koffman signature dessert of pistachio soufflé and admittedly it was to die for.  I may have been sitting on the roof of Selfridges, but with every mouthful of food that passed my lips, I felt closer and closer to heaven.  It was a genuine pleasure from start to finish and it does make you miss the good old days.
