Born in 1977 Leerdammer now outsells rival Emmenthal in France. Over here we have been slower to pick up on this popular cheese but with new easy to grate sizes and a Mature option, this versatile cheese should become much more of a family favourite. We take a taste and offer up some tasty recipes too.

Chirpily written packed full of useful information, clearly explained, and with 100 tempting recipes, this unassuming book can hold its own with the glossy fantasies we’re more used to seeing. It has practicality at its heart and it wants to help you look after yours. What’s not to like about that?

Jak’s is open from early until late, a real constant presence in a very sweet street, a place where locals clearly go at all hours to meet friends, refuel and recharge. It reminds me of a New York side street deli; busy, warm but without the rather intimidating ‘hurry up’ of a NY eaterie. The staff work their socks off to keep it all moving and we could do with more places like Jak’s in London.

The Covent Garden Market Place, Grocer, Deli, Cafe is so new I can still smell wood shavings from the fit out and polenta is definitely for sale, along with a whole host of foody things you lust after, while not always entirely sure what they are or what they do

One pot meals? Hmm that’s going to mean a load of old casseroles isn’t it? Those sludgy brown meals that always have at least one carrot bobbing about like a torpedoed Noel Coward going down in the North Atlantic. Well actually, no. Just One Pot has pushed the definition.

We all want to drink responsibly but that doesn't just mean simply not getting hammered. We should all be drinking wines that are local, so as to cut the carbon footprint, and wines that are well priced, to cut the shopping bills. Welcome to Bordeaux.
