Recipes from Brixton Village, by Miss South.

Brixton’s ascent into the foodie world has been well documented. But this new book from local food writer, Miss South, is a refreshing reminder of the area’s history of diversity, told through some unique recipes.
Firstly, Recipes from Brixton Village serves as a nice introduction to Brixton’s eateries. It has a whole section dedicated to the different traders in Brixton Village.
But what makes this book different is that it is written with insight, by a member of the community. Miss South really gets underneath the patty crust of Brixton’s food scene, while plotting the fascinating history of Granville Arcade (aka Brixton Village).
So it’s not just about the restaurants. Miss South has collaborated with shop traders too. You’ll find recipes like Pomegranate Glazed African Land Snails, inspired by Sierra Leone Groceries, and Sea Bream Ceviche from L&J Fishmongers.
Ever wondered what Alligator pepper is? Or been dying to try a Tamarind Margarita? Me neither. But this book is full of things you never realised you needed to know about. What’s more, if you’re a South Londoner, all the ingredients to the recipes can be easily found in ‘The Village’.
So, more than just a demonstration of Brixton’s diversity, it is a warm homage to the many different influences in the UK’s food culture in general.
The book has been a community collaboration all round. The local illustrator, Kaylene Alder, throws a unique and subtle slither of colour into the mix, to represent Brixton visually. It’s a refreshing change from the ubiquitous food photography of most cookbooks. And of course, each of the market traders have invested time and recipes too.
All in all then, a pretty good gift for any South Londoner who might want a behind the scenes peak at Brixton’s food traders.
Recipes from Brixton Village will be available from both local independent and huge online retailers (ahem, Amazon) from Thursday 22nd May.
