Danielle Woodward is prolonging the festive feels at the Winter Gingerbread Terrace at German Gymnasium, open all January
German Gymnasium has created a cosy, welcoming Gingerbread Winter Terrace, in partnership with Maker’s Mark bourbon whisky, offering a fantastic range of spiced cocktails to accompany traditional German dishes.
We sat under overhead heaters, behind the pretty gingerbread-themed decor, looked on by two giant nutcracker statues and began our evening with a steaming mug each of Mulled Winter Pear (Maker’s Mark with mulled pear, egg white, lemon and red wine) and a Kentucky Mulled Cider (Maker’s Mark and spiced apple). Just the thing to warm up on a cold January evening.
We ordered a selection of small dishes to share from the bar menu; although you can expect a lot of Wurst, being German cuisine, Veganuary hasn’t been totally forgotten with the Vegan chickpea and lentil burger on a bed of sauerkraut with vegan cheddar and crispy onions.
That was a good balance to the other meaty dishes we ordered: the GG hot dog (marjoram-spiced pork sausage with coleslaw, mild mustard sauce and crispy onions on a brioche roll), the German sausage trio (a couple of ‘wursts’ and a curry-infused sausage with spicy tomato sauce) plus the Elsässer Flammekuchen, a flatbread with creme fraiche, bacon and chives.
My second cocktail, Maker’s Milk, was like a dessert; Maker’s Mark mixed with Kahlua, rum, vanilla, double cream and egg white, served in a dinky milk bottle - it was deliciously indulgent.
My friend had the Gingerbread Old Fashioned (Maker’s Mark with gingerbread syrup and toasted marshmallow) which she said was ‘Christmas in a cocktail’. Just because it’s January, it doesn’t mean you need to forego all the good stuff from the month before!
Make sure you visit before the terrace closes on 31st January, and if you’re still hungry, you could always venture into the main restaurant, Grand Cafe or the Meister Bar afterwards for the full glamour of the German Gymnasium experience.
