Silky carpaccio and charred ruby porterhouse steak, new Park Lane addition MR PORTER delivers bold flavours in a sleek late-night London setting.

Although not related to the clothing brand, MR PORTER is just as sleek and minimalistic and with a chic flair. Unlike the clothing brand though a dinner here won’t set you back at an outfit price. However, it’ll certainly impress with its quality.

Arrived from Amsterdam it’s a new resident of both the prestigious Park Lane at Hilton Hotel and the UK. Down the marbled spiral stairs it’s effortlessly settled in the former Trader Vic’s space.

MR PORTER’s specialty is cooking on open fire, it’s technically a steakhouse, but they also do a stunning selection of fish. There is also a separate menu element of carpaccio of land and sea creatures.

Avocado carpaccio caviar draws our attention. So does Mr and Mrs Porter porterhouse steak cuts. We contemplate on ordering separate cuts such as lady mignon and sirloin at first but decide against it.

After all there are two dishes carrying the restaurant name, it’d be a sin to ignore them. So it’s settled – a large 1200 gram Mr Porter to share and fish dishes to start with.

First to arrive is MR PORTER focaccia, which is complimentary but it could easily suffice for a first course of 12 in a Michelin starred restaurant.

Airy fresh hot tear and share foccacia served with three dips, nutty tahini, creamy feta and rich garlic and parsley. This is a design your own dip, you can try each individually or get creative by mixing one with another experimenting with the proportions.

The garlic one has a character, think garlic in Spain, spicy and aromatic, add too much and the mouth is on fire.

To follow is a classic beef tartar topped with beluga caviar and a delightful plate of yellow tail sashimi.

The yellowtail is impeccable, delicate and sweet plump slices each served on a satisfyingly crispy lotus root disk, for an extra spice it’s topped with an ultra thin chilli stick. Simple yet so good.

With the little- kick start dishes quickly gone it’s time for the carpaccios, as with previous courses it’s fish and meat.

Beautiful ruby red roast beef carpaccio and seabass and tomato. Tender yet robust, the beef balances the depth of roasted flavour with elegance of a classic carpaccio presentation: olive oil, black pepper and a dash of spring onion.

After the warmth of beef, the seabass arrives like a breath of sea air, we probably should have eaten the fish first. But nevertheless, it’s a smooth transition to the silky fine slices that are nicely brighten up by sweet sun-ripened tomatoes.

Light and refreshing and perfectly complemented by some citrus acidity at just the right level, no overpowering sourness.

From the ocean back to the land again, the star of the show is unapologetically rich MR PORTER steak, with its charred smokey fatty rim giving way to juicy melt-in-the mouth succulence.

To pair MR PORTER does an excellent ratatouille, it’s not layered like in the Disney famous cartoon but oh my it’s so fine. The veggies are prepared to perfection, so tender with a delicate smokiness to the aubergine and red pepper.

If you fancy something beyond the classical tenderstem broccoli and fries the ratatouille and grilled asparagus with pimientos pardon make an ideal pairing for the steak.

For dessert although we really don’t have space greedily asking for takeaway box to enjoy the remaining of our steak and sides later at home, I still couldn’t resist a little patisserie.

And they are indeed quite French here: puffed mini choux profiteroles with fresh vanilla bean cream and a state of the art pistachio fondant surrounded by frozen bead like raspberry drupelets.

I think I just found my new favourite spot – serving UK grass-fed steak, which is grass fed, raw fish dishes and French style desserts all under one sleek roof.

And let’s not forget the cocktails from Old Fashioned to modern Yuzu Martini and Mezcal Picante served till 2am.

The bar lateness is a bonus in my books, I’m always on a hunt for classy spots that set a sophisticated yet inviting tone.
