As a refreshing alternative to rosé wines for the warm weather, up-market retailer Harvey Nichols have put together a selection of six premium red wines, each with characteristics that make them best served chilled this summer.

Our own number-one pick from this interesting group is Marcel Lapierre Morgon 2016 (£27.50), a seriously made and seriously delicious Cru Beaujolais.

The 100% Gamay vines are grown without the use of synthetic products and the grapes vinified using traditional methods. The unfiltered wine is abundant with crunchy, red-berry fruits, silky tannins and beguiling aromatics.

Thanks to its outstanding quality, Marcel Lapierre Morgon has something of a cult following among the Beaujolais cognoscenti. It can be enjoyed cellar-cool now or stored for up to five years for further development.

Staying in France but moving to a little-known appellation in the Loire valley, Vignerons de Saint-Pourçain, La Ficelle 2016 (£17) is a light Gamay / Pinot Noir blend with a cheeky bottle design that changes every year. Chilled with a grill, the refreshing cherry fruit makes for great lunchtime refreshment.

From the other side of the world, Patrick Sullivan New World Wine 2016 (£30) also delivers Pinot Noir and Gamay, this time with an Australian accent. Organically grown grapes are given a lovingly light touch resulting In a spritzy fruit-driven wine with an earthy honesty.

Another individual Australian choice is Heartland Foreign Correspondent 2016 (£17.50) which employs lesser-known Italian grape varieties, Lagrein and Dolcetto.

Un-oaked, elegant, and fruity, it’s a cool, modern alternative to the traditionally heavier antipodean styles.

The two further summer reds that complete the set hail from booming South America.

Tinto de Rulo Pipeño 2016 (£17) is a quirky choice from Chile. Organically grown Pais grapes are hand harvested from old vines to give an individual reminiscence of kitchen-garden strawberry with notes of rhubarb.

Low in sulpher and with an earthy, rustic charm, Pipeño is a wine to lightly chill and serve with an abundance of vegan dishes.

Argentinian Malbecs are the height of fashion at the moment so it’s not surprising that the Harvey Nichols list includes El Abasto Malbec Bonarda 2016 (£12.50), a wine listed by Decanter Magazine as one of their 30 Great New World Buys.

Fulsome, herbal and packed with juicy, ripe fruit, this is barbecue wine par excellence and all the more satisfying for a spell in the fridge while the coals are lighting.
