There are, from time to time, arrivals upon our shores that feel less like a product launch and more like the unveiling of a story long in the telling.
This month, the United Kingdom welcomes El Supremo Rum, a multi-award-winning spirit from Paraguay’s historic national distillery, founded in 1909.
With it comes an invitation for British connoisseurs to discover Caña Paraguaya — a distinctive national style of rum that marries ancient indigenous wisdom with the refinement of modern luxury.

Where some rums begin their journey with molasses, and others with fresh sugarcane juice in the tradition of rhum agricole, Caña Paraguaya ventures further still.
It begins with the pure essence of sugarcane itself — 100 percent fresh juice — which is then patiently reduced over an open fire for no less than nine hours. What emerges is miel de caña, a rich sugarcane honey whose deep aromas and elegant character are coaxed forth through this rare and rather heroic labour.
At the heart of El Supremo lies the philosophy of Ñande Reko, meaning our way of being — a Guaraní principle grounded in patience, harmony, and respect for the natural world. Central to this tradition is Incienso Marrón, a native Paraguayan wood used for centuries by the Guaraní people.
It lends the spirit an extraordinary softness, a floral depth of aroma, and a complexity that whispers of the forest itself. This ancestral knowledge, handed down through generations, has come to be known as The Secret of the Guaraní.
The rum matures through a distinctive double-cask process. It begins its quiet transformation in casks of Incienso Marrón, where its signature smoothness first takes shape, before moving into French oak barrels that deepen the spirit with layered nuance and balance. El Supremo favours static ageing, rather than the solera method, ensuring that every drop reflects the genuine age of the rum and the subtropical character of Paraguay’s terroir.
Today, El Supremo Rum is enjoyed in more than twenty countries across Europe and North America, steadily building a reputation as one of the most distinctive premium rums on the international stage. Its arrival in the UK is accompanied by a host of global awards recognising its craftsmanship, smoothness, and remarkable depth of flavour.
Whether savoured slowly over ice or forming the elegant foundation of a finely crafted cocktail, El Supremo stands as a testament to Paraguay’s national distillery and its enduring mission: to preserve and celebrate the legacy of Caña Paraguaya.
The El Supremo 5-Year-Old, 8-Year-Old, 12-Year-Old, and 18-Year-Old expressions are now available in the UK, with prices starting from RRP £35.
