Celebrating the history and longevity of Pie & Mash in London, Smith & Whistle is heading into the autumn/winter season with an exclusive new pairing menu dedicated to this British classic, coinciding with British Food Fortnight.

Each pie is paired with an unique mash and alcoholic drink to complement and enhance the flavours on each plate.

Taking inspiration from the fictional story of 1920s Detective Inspector Smith and his pursuit of the crook with class, Mr. William Whistle, the Smith & Whistle menu includes traditional ingredients as well as modern takes on the celebrated dish.

Highlights on the menu include the Best of British pie with short rib beef, seasonal root vegetables and potato enclosed in puff pastry alongside a sweet caramelised onion and bacon mash . The Best of British pie is paired with a Curious IPA, an ideal partner to revive the palate and cut through the beef.

Fishing for Clues is made up of seasoned sea favourites including salmon, crayfish, smoked haddock and mussels in a creamy sauce, paired with a cauliflower cheese mash and sparkling rosé to cleanse the palate and complement the oily texture of the fish with a refreshing, fruity contrast.

The Roaring 20s pie harks back to the history of the traditional East-ender pie, filled with stout and mutton and set in a suet pastry, served with a truffle mash, giving this favourite a modern day twist. The Roaring 20s pie is paired with a smooth, creamy Nitro Engine Stout with hints of coffee, slightly buttered toffee and dark chocolate to accompany the velvety, roasted flavours.

For a lighter option, ther’s the Piggy In The Middle pork pie prepared with a apple and cress salad alongside a piccalilli, which has been paired with a clear golden Shiehallion craft lager with hints of lemon and bright, floral hops to complement the full flavour of the pork.

Pairings continue into the dessert menu with an apple and rhubarb pie served with salted caramel ice cream and paired with a fruity Mai Tai. The plum and fennel crumble pie, with a pink peppercorn sorbet alongside damson plum and fennel jam, is paired with the infamous Smith & Whistle Negroni.

The exclusive Pie & Mash Menu will be available daily at Smith & Whistle from 23rd September 2017 until the end of November. Prices start from £9.
