In February, Morito Exmouth Market will reprise its popular event celebrating the seasonal flavours and party atmosphere of the Gran Fiesta de la Calçotada.
This annual gastronomical event held in Valls, Catalonia marks the harvest of the calçot, a type of green onion.
Morito’s Calçotada set menu which will be served every Sunday night in February will include the charcoal grilled calçots with romesco sauce alongside grilled chorizo, morcilla and butifara with white beans, followed by almond tart served in traditional style with slices of chilled orange.
The popularity of the calçot, which is somewhere between a spring onion and a leek, has given rise to the Calçotada. True to the Catalonian spirit, it is a great excuse to get together, talk, party and more importantly eat onions.
Large bunches of calçots fresh from the earth are grilled over an open fire until charred then wrapped in newspaper to steam through.
The calçots are served on terracotta tiles, peeled with bare hands, dunked in rich romesco sauce made from almonds and peppers, and then eaten. The calçots are typically served with grilled meats and washed down with plenty of wine and vermut.
£40 per head, every Sunday night in February.
