This summer sees the opening of Platapian on Greek Street from restaurateur Nam Parama Raiva, bringing culinary heritage and forgotten family recipes to the table in Soho.

Created by Nam and Head Chef Phayom Phimkrua, Platapian‘s menu draws on recipes passed down by her aunts, mother and grandmother.

As well as looking to time-honoured family recipes, much of the menu also reflects the diverse regional influences of both Northern and Southern Thailand, from the bold, fiery flavours of the South to the delicate, aromatic dishes from the North.

Designed to be shared, the menu begins with ‘Gub Glaem’, small snacks that include crispy chicken skin with garlic and kaffir lime and okra fritters.

‘Gub Khao’ follows with signature mains including tiger prawn with ‘pla’ chilli sauce & lemongrass, beef short ribs in five spice ‘paloh’ & salted egg yolk and claypot rice including jumbo crab with crispy lard.

The menu concludes with pudding, including pandan crème brûlée with coconut milk ice cream & crispy Thai roll crêpe and southern style roti with banana & Petchaburi coconut caramel.

Taking its name from the Platapian, a traditional woven barb fish made from palm leaves, the name symbolises abundance, prosperity and the passing of good fortune from one generation on to the next in Thai culture.

The platapian is a meaningful emblem for the restaurant, representing its deep connection to family history and the family’s London restaurants, Patara.

Established in London over 35 years ago, Nam’s aunt, Khun Patara Sila-On introduced many Thai recipes to London, combining the complexity of Thai flavours with local, seasonal produce sourced from across the UK.

Through Platapian, Nam want to continue the legacy of her family, refined for a modern audience.

The drinks menu follows the same ethos, using Thai fruits, herbs and spices for a cocktail list that mirrors the vibrant flavours of the kitchen, including the tom yum-tini made using Finlandia vodka, lime and bird’s eye chilli.

The Pak Praew Margarita with tequila, pak praew, mint, lime, palm sugar and the Mango Sticky Rice with coconut sticky rice, Finlandia vodka and mango puree.

While the restaurant’s interiors are inspired by the tranquility of Thai riverside homes, the space is softly lit with pendant lights and bordered by tropical plants, reminiscent of the riverside dwellings found across Thailand.
