Appropriately enough on World Sandwich Day, we found ourselves at Butlers Wharf Chop House trying out two new toasties – The Wagyu One and The Vegan One,

Butlers Wharf Chop House and Coal Drop Yards sandwichery Morty & Bob’s have partnered up alongside a curated selection of craft beers from Meantime Brewing.

Butlers Wharf Chop House is a special place to eat it, right next to Tower Bridge and yards from the river, which was looking very Heart of Darkness on a November day.

‘The sea-reach of the Thames stretched before us like the beginning of an interminable waterway.”

Tables were laid outside the restaurant, more I think for show than in hope of anyone actually braving the chill wind off the water.

Inside is snug, although I would say it’s in need of a freshen up after all these years.

We shared both of the new toasties and two pints of Meantime Pale Ale; Pale Ale still being the hipster choice of beer as they can rave about the ‘hoppiness’. The Meantime, thankfully, is not over hopped.

The Vegan One, with ‘pulled pork’ in a chipotle barbecue sauce and an apple and ginger slaw we tried first and this was very good. The ‘pork’ quite realistic in look and texture and the balance of the slaw against the sauce keenly judged. That said, we both thought the chipotle could have been turned up higher.

The Wagyu One, filled with Highland Wagyu pastrami with smoked applewood cheese in a truffle yuzu grape mustard sauce was a good flavour bomb, as you might imagine, but the bread had been fried.

This resulted in a lot of oil in the bread and a crispiness that was in fact friable, so that the sandwich broke into small pieces when picked up. A bit annoying , that.

Excellent chunky chips came with the toastis along with a pot of truffled mayo. Not real truffles, I don’t expect, but I am not snobbish about that. Still tasted great.

Get your grill on at either location until 1 December at both sites
