There is a new kid in town and it can sing. Ristorante Frescobaldi, Vocalé Mayfair has introduced a new concept, every Saturday. Come lunch or dinner and the dining area transfers into a stage.
Starting just like any ordinary restaurant dinner we are greeted and seated at the table. As we pass by some instruments can be seen all set for the evening.
It’s a bright and airy space with large windows and interesting tiled artwork.
For the dishes it’s a fairly short but varied menu, for starters there is a bit of everything from arancini to salad and burrata, which is particularly good.
With a button like bob at the top, the burrata has a homemade feel to it. It’s paired nicely with red and yellow cherry tomatoes, revealing particularly creamy stracciatella inside.

We scoop the creamy goodness with our bite sized bruschetta and rosemary focaccia. So far so good, plus there are gently marinated Nocellara olives for a bit of a sour tone. As mentioned the ticket covers all the starters.
But that’s not even all of them, bar-sized parmigiana di malanzane follow. Melt in the mouth aubergine layers, tomato sauce and parmesan.
We get one each, in fact all of the starters are thoughtfully planned out, served in equal portions to share, no need for that awkward ‘would you like to cut in half or shall I?’ question.
Except for one starter – the greens, it’s lambs lettuce salad topped with shredded chicken breast and more parmesan. Light and simple, it lets the natural chicken flavour shine.

Of the arancinis we get two each and although the texture is good, a soft centre and great coating, the flavour is a bit too rice like.
The band is in full spin now, playing and singing anything from Mama Mia classics to disco and pop hits. The best part is that the crew doesn’t just stand in one spot, the singers cruise through the dining hall.
And the band well, they are in fact waiters, chefs and hosts. As the dinner progresses to the mains so is the singing, becoming more dance like slowly setting us for what to come.
It’s impossible to sit still, we tap our feet and dance but only while sitting down for now.
My guest and I want to have the mains before the dancing begins. For mains there is a choice of three: braised beef, black truffle rigatoni and roasted chicken.
Given we’re in an Italian establishment pasta is a natural choice for me, while my guest goes for the chicken.

Rigatonis are tube shaped pasta with ridge and hollow inside to fully grasp the sauce; here it’s a creamy black truffle. It’s perfectly balanced and simply delicious.
You don’t often find pasta this good outside of Italy, it’s perfectly al dente of course.
The pasta disappears faster than I wish. Meanwhile my guest lingers over hers solely because it’s a generous size, a leg and half a breast of perfectly tender, fall off the bone succulent meat. Paired with aromatic sage jus and roasted potatoes. Y
ou definitely won’t leave Vocalé hungry but the good news are the party here goes till 1am so the energy for the dancing is much needed.
The final dish of the evening is pistachio tiramisu, nutty, rich, it’s a dish to share. Thick pastel green pistachio flavoured mascarpone revealing moist savoiardi and no coffee liquor.
It’s a beautiful twist on a classic. Now we are ready for the dancing and the time couldn’t be more perfect as the chef walks through the tables handing out handkerchiefs for the Bamboleo.
Guests jump up waving them overhead. As the table after table picks up forming a moving circle around the tables it’s impossible not to join, we are of course part of the dance team now.
For those who prefer a quieter spot, the room features a few tucked-away corners that still enjoy the singers’ attention but offer a more relaxed atmosphere.
Guests can sit back with a glass of wine and soak in the ambiance—if they can resist joining the fun. Most diners are groups of friends and families, along with a few couples looking to add something special to date night.
For a special occasion or when you want a bit of a Mediterranean vibe without an international flight, now we know just the spot.
