Somehow, amid the churn of a city that periodically reinvents itself like an over-caffeinated actor changing costumes between scenes, Le Garrick has quietly endured.
Just a short stroll from Leicester Square, Le Garrick has occupied its corner of Covent Garden since 1986. In that time, governments have risen and fallen, fashions have come and gone, and entire restaurant trends have enjoyed full life cycles. Through it all, Le Garrick has remained reassuringly itself.
The restaurant is owned by Dominika and Charles Lepelletier, who first met at Le Garrick more than two decades ago. Charles, a Frenchman who grew up between Toulouse, Burgundy and the Basque Country, became a regular after discovering what he describes as “a little piece of France” hidden within London’s theatre district. Many dishes on the menu draw inspiration from family recipes and memories passed down through generations.
Upstairs, diners watch Covent Garden’s endless theatre drift by. Downstairs is one of London’s most intimate dining rooms: candlelit alcoves, exposed brickwork, hidden corners and the gentle soundtrack of classic French chansons.
This June, the French restaurant celebrates its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of serving authentic French cuisine, generous hospitality and a distinctly Gallic sense that a meal should be an occasion .
To mark the occasion, Le Garrick is doing something that sounds almost as fantastical as time travel itself: for one day only, on 29 June, guests can enjoy a special anniversary menu at 1986 prices.
