Nick gets to enjoy a preview, with Saturday Kitchen star Gemma Ogston offering up a feast of healing vegan foods

Mama Shelter London Shoreditch part of the Mama Shelter global portfolio, has launched ‘Mama’s Kitchen Table’; a monthly series of supper clubs which will see a new guest chef grace Mama’s kitchen to share homecooked recipes. Each guest will create their bespoke menu in partnership with Mama Shelter London Shoreditch’s Executive Chef, James Green.

The series will kick off with Mama’s Gem Supper Club on 26th, 27th and 28th September, with BBC Saturday Kitchen regular, published recipe author and vegan legend, Gemma Ogston, bringing her Gem’s Wholesome Kitchen concept to Shoreditch for an eight-course foodie extravaganza. |

Priced at £69 per person including service charge, Gem’s eight-course vegan menu offers a series of mood- boosting, plant-based, high-vibe homemade dishes that celebrate ingredients with healing resources, alongside a complimentary welcome drink.

I was happy to go along to a preview lunch, with Gemma herself in the house, and found her a ball of energy and positivity that’s a real advert for the power of her vegan food.

Her new cookbook – The Healing Cookbook – comes out in September, and leafing through it at table I found food for thought, as well some great recipes.

We kicked off the eight-course menu with home-made Seeded Bread with whipped miso butter and Rayo oil with kimchi. Brilliant bread, crusty and seedy with great flavour. The kimchi juices had just seeped into the bread enough and the miso butter was even better than plain butter, and I love butter.

After that a Miso & Ginger Consommé with tofu crisp, kombu seaweed flakes, udon noodles and kale was pacjed with flavour and felt energising. After that a Truffle Mushroom Paté on sourdough bruschetta, with sun-dried tomato chutney and a dressed micro cress salad put a bit of timber in our bellies before being lightly washed downwith Tumeric & Yuzu Gazpacho with peach salad and toasted sunflower seeds.

Taken straight from her new cookbook, the Cauliflower Tacos were remarkable. A slightly messy eat, they’re made up from Southeast Asian mango salsa and whipped Hass avocado with maple syrup. The char on the cauli added some serious smoky goodness

After that Lemongrass Granita withThai basil oil and crushed avocado was a delicate palate cleanser, before a Pineapple Upside-down cake using vegan Chantilly and roasted pineapple puree, served with a rich Dark Chocolate Pot with poached cherries and chia seeds. The chocolate pot was the only dish I didn’t care for, I don’t think chocolate works without dairy.

Still though, what a meal. I left feeling buoyed up and not weighed down and whilst it may be psychosomatic, I did feel like I was a lot healthier!
