Robert Mondavi opened his winery in 1966, his reported intention – to produce Californian wines that belonged in the company of the great wines of the world. Given the producer’s prominence in the Napa Valley, we decided to sample a couple of Robert Mondavi’s premiere wines and let you have our thoughts.
Discover the Origin!
The Discover the Origin campaign has hit London. The purpose of the campaign is to promote five European products: Parma ham (PDO), Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese (PDO), Burgundy wines (AOC), Port and Douro Valley wines (DOC). These protective markings have a dual purpose, to protect the regional producers against imitations and to enable you, the consumer to be sure you are getting exactly what you are looking for.
Mestizo celebrates its fifth anniversary
Vivid yellow RouteMaster bus? Check. Eight-foot inflatable beer bottle? Check. Lycra-clad Amazon on stilts? Check. Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the fifth anniversary celebrations at Mestizo, a very popular Mexican restaurant in Hampstead Road.
Findus Chicken Curry Crispy Pancakes Are Back On The Menu!
As a kid, we would all tuck into foods that, perhaps, we don’t really indulge in as adults anymore. Sometimes it’s because we outgrow them and other times it’s because they were discontinued and we forgot about them. Well fear not my friends because one of the nation’s favourites is soon to be back in Supermarkets
Cracking crabs at Trishna
Crabs can look quite alien to us ugly humans. What with their shifty sideways glances and bollard eyes. Maybe that’s why dismantling them remains such a daunting prospect to cooks. So, Trishna to the rescue, the Indian restaurant in London’s Marylebone has decided to offer a series of crab-cracking master classes each Sunday followed by a three course crabby meal.
Miss Q’s, Earl’s Court Road, London
Although the most immediately obvious aspect here is perhaps the pool bar, there’s much more to Miss Q’s than that, making it a great place to meet, drink, eat or dance and what the heck, maybe even have a game of pool.
Fetzer wines. The green way to drink
As we decanted out into Kings Cross reeking of garlic, the general feeling was that, PowerPoint aside, Fetzer are good people making pretty good wines and should be encouraged. Eco credentials do not necessarily a great wine make but it’s certainly a route winemakers should consider going down, even if that route occasionally leads to a funny old converted pub in North London.
Franco Manca, Chiswick
Now it could be that I don’t understand or appreciate a true Naples pizza base and if so mea culpa, Franco Manca, but I can only compare to the Brixton version and these aren’t as good. However Brixton sets a high benchmark and these are still (leafy) streets ahead of the competition.
Gobble Gobble, the bloggers make a noise about Marco Pierre White talking turkey
So Marco Pierre White is to be a brand ambassador for Bernard Mathews Turkeys and the sound of bloggers and sanctimonious columnists having hissy fits is deafening. You’d have thought they would have exhausted their anger when MPW started advertising stock cubes, but no there is still plenty of bile to spare. Honestly you’d have thought he’d been caught eating Panda, not simply earning a few quid for himself
1,001 Shades of Pink Provincia Nostra
Whilst Roman poet, Martial described the wines as ‘terrible’, Douglas Blyde finds pleasure in a particular pink wine from Provence…
