The Henry Root

Right wing nutcase? A legend in wet fish? A lifelong fan of Thatcher? Henry Root was all of these and now he’s a gastropub too. Anita Pati goes to see what the old man is cooking up in Chelsea.

Café East

More like a canteen than a café, even today there are more tables full than empty, quite a feat when you consider it’s a Friday afternoon and, as I may have mentioned already, we’re in the middle of a leisure park. The dining room is bright, clean and ever so slightly clinical and runs a ticket system when it’s even busier.

The Jam Tree a gastropub in Chelsea

The menu makes no apology for offering something for everyone, the ambience is cool and the staff pleasantly unprofessional, in a good way, and relaxed. The Asian side seems to be stronger than the others, although the burgers did look good as they went past. Slightly hotter starters and I could really warm to The Jam Tree.

Petrichor, The Cavendish Hotel, Jermyn Street, London

Petrichor has a seasonal a la carte menu and describe their cooking style as ‘contemporary British’. The ingredients used in preparing their dishes are sourced wherever possible from British farms and producers. The food at Petrichor was excellent and the atmosphere was sedate and charming we very much enjoy our meal there.

Trullo

Hurray, Trullo! Some nine months after it opened, I have finally been! Brushing past it on my way to Highbury & Islington tube, this esteemed neighbourhood restaurant, in my own neighbourhood, has been rammed happy every time I pass.

Bay of Bengal, 164 High St, Edinburgh

High Street/The Royal Mile is a tourist magnet and a busy place night and day. Eateries line both sides of the mile and there is something to tempt every palate but if it’s good, honest Indian/Thai cooking you are looking for in relaxed, friendly surroundings, the Bay of Bengal ticks all the boxes and won’t dent your wallet.

India Dining, Warlingham

They say that the Warlingham area has more millionaires than anywhere else in England, outside of London that is. There’s one less this month though after the sad demise of local lad Smiley Culture. Apparently Mr Culture’s cash came from wisely investing the modest sums he made from his 80s hit singles like Police Officer into gold and diamond mine concessions in places like Liberia, Kenya, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Barbican Lounge

The Barbican Lounge is a relatively new restaurant, the space having been completely renovated, retaining a 60’s/70’s style (yeah baby!). The menu is anything but 60’s/70’s, they have gone for tapas style eating. So, if you just want some great food served in a tapas style while enjoying a relaxed atmosphere, it’s a great place to visit.
