The only Nepalese food I’d encountered in the past was awful. Happily, Rajiv’s supperclub revealed some interesting flavours – prepared by a great and welcoming host.
Foxlow
The timing of Foxlow’s opening couldn’t have been better. My usual go-to restaurant in Clerkenwell has been rather inconsistent of late, culminating in a shockingly poor performance that pushed me into the transfer market quicker than Mark Hughes with a blank cheque book.
Salaam Namaste
Bloomsbury restaurant Salaam Namaste has just relaunched to celebrate its new modern décor and menu but until I attended its launch party, I had no idea it was such a hit with legal eagles from nearby Lincoln’s Inn.
Retro Feasts in Mayfair London
For Luke Thomas, just 19, the 70s must be as relevant to him as the Wars of the Roses are to me – a time of horror that he managed to miss out on. Nonetheless, he’s got a bit of a fascination for the decade that fashion forgot and has a temporary restaurant, Retro Feasts, serving up some reinvented classics at the Embassy Club until January
Tapas at La Mancha, Chiswick, London
La Mancha aims to bring independent Spanish cuisine to a Chiswick High Road choc-full of commercial chains. Does it succeed? Alex Ozga finds out.
Pip’s Dish, Covent Garden
Pip’s Dish in general delivers a pleasing meal at a good price and in a style that is now pretty much unique in central London. It doesn’t have bare brick walls; it doesn’t have those ubiquitous filament lights. And this close to the West End I doubt you’ll find better value.
The Earl Derby, Kilburn
There’s something strange happening to the Kilburn high road. To the locals, the ones that have been here for the longest, these may well seem like the end times.
Urban Meadow
Urban Meadow, all day eating, a changing British menu, bright cheerful surroundings and keen to please staff and when the weather’s warmer a good place for al fresco feeding.
Dim sum at Royal China, Queensway
Service was quick and amicable, with none of the supposed coldness that some other online reviews complain about. The dishes are priced at an affordable £3-4.50. At that price, it’s easily worth a punt.
Pulcinella, Soho
Ignoring a string of bad reviews on restaurant websites, I turned a blind-eye to the keyboard critics and had dinner at Pulcinella on Old Compton Street anyway.
